‘Nose-Udom’: Big Nose, Big Talent

‘Nose’ in His new film “Kill Tim”

The Reason You Should Know Him: No.1 Thai stand-up comedian, the one and only who can hold the shows as much as legend singer ‘Bird-Thongchai.’

One of few Thai creative comedians, the talented “Udom Tae-panich” was born on September 1, 1968. Some says his nickname ‘Nose’ came from his big nose!

‘Nose’ started from zero to hero, he began his career from stage show and creative magazine “Pai-Yal-Yai” (Thai hit magazine in 1980s). After the magazine was closed, he turned himself into TV showbiz. Because of his unique character, he was gradually being recognized and became the main participant in some top comedian programs in 90s.

‘Nose’ on the stage

‘Nose’ took a big chance when he decided to quit the TV job. In 1995, He initiated the first solo stand-up comedy show named “Diew.” (Solo) The show was well accepted and later became cult phenomenon. “Diew” was held another 5 times! And each time consisted of 20-40 shows. He became the most beloved and most awaited performer. His show always sold out, and its CD also became best seller! (I heard some Japanese said “I wanna see it, but there is no Japanese subtitle!” – Wise policy, are you interested? Ha Ha)

Fame brings more success… Other than stage show, ‘Nose’ released the books and music album. Even some critics told that “Nose’s books are literature rubbish!” But over 10 books of him were the bestsellers. And he also attracted to the movie directors!

‘Nose’ in “Loveaholic” and “Go!”

In 1998, he began the leading role in “Box,” the movie of legend director ‘Prince Chatrichalerm Yukol.’ After that he played in romantic drama “Loveaholic” (2006) and black comedy “Go!” (2007) Some kidded him “A plain-looking guy who can be movie actor!”

In 2002, ‘Nose’ shocked the fan by announced that he will quit the show “Diew” for next 5 years, despite he was still at the peak! ‘Nose’ moved to live in Chiang Mai (Northern Thai province). He disappeared from mass media and just did his favourite artworks and writings. He sometimes held his own art exhibitions. After years of silence, he slowly came back by appeared on some stage shows, TV, and movies in 2006-2007. He really falls in love with his new hometown Chiang Mai, he once said “Now Chiang Mai is my home, and Bangkok is my working place.” He even opened the ice-cream shop there, and some fans go there to meet him especially.

“Diew 7” poster

As promised, ‘Nose’ made big comeback in 2008! He proved that he is still the best. He performed over 40 shows of “Diew 7,” and most were sold out. He also played the leading role and worked as screenwriter in the latest comedy-drama movie “E Tim Tai Nae!” (Kill Tim).
Except his humor and outstanding character, I think his strong point is “the ability to narrate and apply.” He notices everything around him such as news, gossips, lifestyle, culture, politics and teen trends – then he applies them into the gags and narrates in his own way. That’s why his gags can touch many people.

Some might say now he’s famous, so he can do anything. But ‘Nose’ always says his success comes from learning and work hard. And most important; “He does the thing he loves, and does it best!”
